The IRS is warning consumers to avoid responding to emails concerning the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System because they could be coming from a fraudulent source, CFO Daily News reports.
According to the IRS, the latest scam being implemented by tax fraudsters involves tricking business workers into revealing personal information. It all starts with an email prompting a staffer to click a link in order to correct some misinformation on tax forms and ends with the staffer handing over sensitive information or opening an attachment, which could include malware.
IRS.gov states that it never sends unsolicited emails to taxpayers concerning their accounts and never requests personal information to be transferred via email.
The emails appear authentic, which makes it even more important for employees to be aware of such scams. Failure to keep workers up to date about tax fraud schemes may result in major losses for a company.
