E.W. Cromartie, the former Columbia City, South Carolina, councilman who was convicted of tax evasion earlier this year, is now reporting to federal prison.
Cromartie was sentenced to serve a year and one day behind bars back in October, after he was found guilty of evading income and employment tax payments.
IRS officials found he failed to pay more than $25,000 in income taxes in 2004, Williamsburg County, South Carolina-news provider WLTX reports. Overall, prosecutors say the state official failed to pay the government $58,075 in taxes.
In court, Cromartie admitted to making small cash deposits and withdrawals to avoid IRS minimum reporting requirements on the transactions, the news source says. Cromartie will be held in Salters, a medium-security prison for men, and is scheduled to be released in December of this year.
The former councilman resigned from his post in March, after holding the office for nearly 30 years. He was the city's longest-serving councilman. After holding a special election, Brian Newman was chosen to replace Cromartie in his former seat.
