Wesley Snipes recently made headlines when he motioned for a retrial in the tax evasion charges against him. Now, those who helped the actor and several others avoid filling taxes are receiving jail time after swindling the government out of nearly $1 billion.
The Washington Post reports that four promoters of the Florida company, American Rights Litigators, are now being sentenced to serve time in federal prisons. Eddie Ray Kahn, the founder of the group, received 20 years for conspiracy to defraud the United States and one count of mail fraud. Currently, he is serving 10 years for his involvement in the Snipes case.
"This is precisely the type of conduct the Tax Division is committed to stopping under the National Tax Defier Initiative," acting Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department's Tax Division John DiCicco told the Post. "Those who promote illegal tax defiance face prosecution and lengthy prison terms."
Tax evasion is illegal and considered a federal crime in the United States. Those found guilty may be subjected to jail time and fines. All residents are required to report earnings and assets to the IRS annually.
