A former Los Angeles union leader has been sentenced to four months in prison after swindling nearly $52,000 from a voter outreach program. Alejandro Stephens, 66, pleaded guilty to charges against him last year for mail fraud and tax evasion. On top of his federal prison sentence, he will be under house arrest for three months.
The Associated Press reports that Stephens was the former president of Service Employees International Union Local 660, a group that represents thousands of workers in the Los Angeles area. In 2004, a nonprofit group called the Voter Improvement Project came to an agreement to work with Stephens. Friends and family members paid Stephens for work that never occurred, according to the AP. Instead, he used the money for his 2004 re-election campaign, prosecutors say.
Tax evasion is considered a federal crime in the United States. Those found guilty may be subject to jail time and fines. The government relies on the revenue to fund public programs, such as Social Security and Medicaid. All U.S. residents are required to report assets and earnings to the Internal Revenue Service annually.
